(Virtual Press Office) - The City of Freiburg is internationally known for its environ-mental approach and its extensive use of solar energy and other renewable sources. It can share experiences gained over many years and showcase a multitude of effective technical and organisational solutions related to sustainable energy management. Focussing early on environmental sustainability and photovoltaic has given the city decisive advantages in a competitive international environment. Freiburg's solar businesses and research institutes profit from a close-knit network, and the city's renown and contacts. Hosting a number of prestigious events through-out the year, Freiburg has become a lively centre of the solar industry, and a think tank for sustainability. Green Economy and Green City Cluster Freiburg represents the successful integration of former oppo-sites – ecology and economy. Environmentally sound policies, solar energy technologies, sustainability and environmental protection have become the driving forces behind economic, political and urban development in Freiburg. With around 12,000 employees – nearly three percent of the economically active population – spread across 2,000 businesses and institutions, the environmental and solar sectors contribute approximately 650 million Euro to the regional economy and even more to the region's positive reputation. The Cluster Freiburg Green City links the stakeholders and in-stitutions of the environmental and solar industry as well as promoting cooperations and the transfer of know-how. The Cluster helps to position the products and services of its mem-ber companies and institutions globally in areas as diverse as renewable and especially solar energy, energy efficiency, sus-tainable building and environmental technologies. A long green history Freiburg rightly regards itself as one of the birthplaces of the environmental protection movement. The successful campaign in the seventies and early eighties against the construction of a nuclear power station at nearby Wyhl – one of the key moments in the formation of the alternative/green movement – mobilised and united a diverse coalition of students, anti-nuclear lobbyists, and promotors of a new social consciousness on the one hand, and conservative Freiburg citizens on the other, into an ongoing partnership that has shaped society and politics in Freiburg for more than thirty years.
