Press release, Sunday, January 27th 2013
A healthy sector
(Virtual Press Office) -- With €81.9m of collections abroad and a 2%-growth over 2011, the SACEM repertoire does well abroad: film scores and the French Touch help renew the classics.
Three ingredients for this very good year
French electro is a popular export, thanks to world-famous performers: the Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Madonna… are collaborating with the French Touch. For their video clips, Lana Del Rey and Katy Perry called on Woodkid, yet another SACEM member.
David Guetta, Frédéric Riesterer, Bob Sinclar, Air, Justice, David Vendetta, M83, Martin Solveig and C2C hit the jackpot in 2012.
Film scores, a great year!
Special mention goes to Alexandre Desplat, who composed the original soundtracks for several great films (The King's Speech, The Queen and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and Ludovic Bource (The Artist) who received the most prestigious international awards. Film scores also reflect the success of exceptional composers: Bruno Coulais, Gabriel Yared, Maurice Jarre, Eric Serra, Vladimir Cosma and Georges Delerue. Finally, in Japan and elsewhere, Cécile Corbel and Simon Caby met with great success for Studio Ghibli's The Secret World of Arrietty.
Lasting success for the Classics
The global success of works which have become international classics of song - Comme d'habitude (C. François, J. Revaud, L. Thibaud), La vie en rose (E. Piaf, L. Guy), La mer (C. Trenet, A. Lasry) - and classical and contemporary music - Erik Satie, Darius Milhaud, Maurice Ravel, Camille Saint-Saëns, Henri Dutilleux, Olivier Messiaen, Francis Poulenc, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff… - has never waned.
Europe, top export territory
With over €60m in collections, Europe remains the main territory for exporting SACEM repertoire, followed by Asia-Pacific (€8.4m) and North America (€7.8m).
The top ten countries importing SACEM repertoire are (in order of importance): Germany, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands and Spain.
We can also note double-digit growth (+20%) for South America as well as Africa and the Near East.
There are 17,750 of them, of 163 different nationalities, proving how much the SACEM collective management model is appreciated worldwide.
Among the best-known foreign artists who are SACEM members, we can mention Selah Sue and Stromae from Belgium, the American rapper Big Ali and his compatriot John Debney, the English composer John Powell (film scores), Manu Dibango and Irma from Cameroon, Asa and Ayo from Nigeria…
