New 300mm UMC Fab Designed by CH2M HILL Taiwan to Include Cleanrooms the Size of 10 Football Fields
DENVER, July 9, 2012 – CH2M HILL- (Virtual Press Office) - (http://www.ch2mhill.com), a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, helped celebrate the May 24 groundbreaking for a massive new United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) microchip fabrication facility at UMC’s Tainan, Taiwan fab complex.

CH2M HILL’s Taiwan office provided engineering services for the project’s 21-hectare site master plan, manufacturing planning and facility basis of design. CH2M HILL’s IDC Architects group designed the master plan and landscape layout for the site, which includes a parking garage for 3,400 spaces underneath the building.

The two-phase design, known as Fab12A Phase 5 & 6, involves approximately 380,000 square meters of microchip manufacturing and 80,000 square meters (seven floors) of office space. Total multi-level cleanroom area is 53,000 square meters, about the size of 10 American football fields. Process technology will be 28-nanometer initially with future 20/14-nanometer capability.

The project also includes two office buildings, training space, employee service buildings, two power substations, warehouses and a multi-level pedestrian bridge to connect the new building with existing facilities and provide a clean environment for product transport.
